I just so happened to be on the hunt for a new regular barber around the time Essex opened up. It felt meant to be! As a queer dude who unfortunately finds most barbershops to have a super toxic masculine vibe, this spot couldn't be further from it. While it is currently an all-male staff, they couldn't be nicer humans. Taoufik is my man, but Riad is just as talented. I've been getting cut here regularly for around 10 months now and I've not once left disappointed. There is true care put into each haircut. You can tell they're never phoning it on or rushing to get you out—they just want to satisfy their customers! And it seems they enjoy what they do, too. All in all, I'm always comfortable here to speak up, converse, or even stay quiet if I'm not feeling particularly chatty. They offer you water and beer, and they even have a rewards program where you can score free products. I'm not normally compelled to leave reviews, but these guys deserve all the credit in the world! In an industry that can feel more and more dominated by smaller-minded straight men, this barbershop is the opposite: refreshing, inclusive, and impressive.

This is my fav barbershop! Great service, on time, classy decor, fun atmosphere, and friendly staff. I get a cut every few weeks faithfully with my barber Riad. He listens to what you want and he does an amazing job!! So ladies and gentlemen, if you love a great cut or a great fade, all are welcome! Definitely recommend this shop!!!!

First time at Essex Barbershop was a great experience! Shop was clean and inviting, and Lou did a fantastic job cutting my hair. He was attentive and asked a lot of questions to make sure everything was to my liking. Highly recommend!

The top local barbershop for men's haircuts. Always can count on talented and friendly staff (shout out Lou & Riad). It has a very nice waiting area with snacks and drinks. I always walk out looking my best. Would recommend to anyone in need of a high quality hair cut.

Essex is a very clean and welcoming environment. My barber is Lou and he is a great barber! I always get compliments from others when he cuts my hair. He is also very friendly, professional, and ensures you have a great experience. I highly recommend him if you are looking for a haircut at Essex with a great barber.

This is a great local barbershop. Friendly staff, sleek interior, and high quality cuts. Also: sharps containers utilized! I always respect barber safety. BBP is no joke. Good conversation as well, especially coming from me, who is typically quiet and doesn't say much during a cut. Recommended for anyone, but 100% if you live in the area as I believe they have the best prices around the Italian Market/Washington Square.

I had a great experience at Essex. My stylist Riad, understood exactly what I was looking for and took his time with the details, which I have often found hard with my wavy/curly hair. Had a great chat as well, making the experience overall awesome! Will definitely be coming back here. Nice place, great location and reasonable price.

Best haircut in Philly! Had such a great cut and experience at Essex. From the free coffee, the good music, great conversation, and most importantly the haircut. My barber Lou took the time to get me right for an interview tomorrow, and the owner James was extremely friendly. We talked about Korean movies and many different things. They take care of the little details here and I will definitely be back for my next cut. Thank you!

Great place. Barbers take their time and make sure you like the cut before you leave. Never had a bad experience with Luis. He's a genuine & great guy. He takes his time to make sure your cut is the way you want it and is an exceptional barber. I highly recommend cutting with him, you will not be disappointed.

Luis is the man. I followed him from another shop because he’s that good. He’s a perfectionist and my cut is always 10/10, no notes. Best fade in Philly and a meticulous line-up. As for the shop itself, the space is super nice and super clean. You can tell they paid attention to the details. Coffee and beer on tap are a nice touch, and the clean bathroom is a definite plus.
