Great place for a haircut, they really know hair and how to give you a cut specific to your style and long term hair goals. Also prices are great for a city haircut!

Owner's response

Thank you 🙏🏽 Josh always a pleasure

I’ve been getting my hair cut from Alex’s Barber shop for a while now, and every time I walk out of the shop, I feel fresh and confident. They pay great attention to detail, really listen to what you want, and always make sure the cut fits your style. The shop has a relaxed, welcoming vibe, and you can tell they take pride in their work. If you’re looking for a skilled, consistent barber who actually cares about how you look in the UWS, Alex’s Barber is the one to go to!

This is the best haircut I've ever received I went in and the place was full but I was seated in less then 5 minutes. I asked for a low taper and and he gave me exactly what I wanted and he was able to hold a conversation. would recommend to anyone wanting a haircut

Owner's response

I didn't really receive what I asked for. I told them I like to style my hair messy. But they cut it so short that it can't be styled at all. What was the point of our conversation? Besides that I didn't really like the energy in there. It doesn't have that friendly Barber shop feel. It felt very cold and in a hurry. Just like the rest of the city. Moving on.

Owner's response

Thank you for having the time to write this review, as a person who engaged the conversation said “it’s hair it going to grow back their is never a bad haircut” left happily if it was an issue at the moment you could have mentioned and we could have done a refund or credit for a next visit best wishes happy holidays - Gabriel

Walked right in with my long-ish hair at lunch time and Alex gave me a classic scissor cut that ended with a bit of a "Sweeney Todd" flourish. All for around $30 which is a great bargain these days. Alex definitely has skills and keeps it chill in this comfortable neighborhood spot just off Broadway and 100th street.

Owner's response

Thank you Nicholas was a pleasure

Walk-in haircut was great by Gabriel today. I gave him some reference photos and he made sure to cut my hair the way I had it described. I’m Korean and am usually hesitant to get my hair cut by people that aren’t Korean, but Gabriel did great! Super skilled and accommodating + haircut is affordable. This is also a family-run business and a super wholesome one at that. Loved the conversation with Gabriel too and honestly wishing him the best :).

Owner's response

Thank you Thomas 🙏🏽 was a pleasure having you today good luck onto your journey 🙏🏽💈

So, I've got some mixed feelings toward the barber shop. Not because of the quality of their work, I've been going there since I was a kid and always felt satisfied with the result, but with what my last visit implies for their relationship with customers going forward. In all the years I've gone there, there's always been a little sign outside letting you know the price of a regular haircut. Nice, simple, and lets you know what you can expect. It's gone up over time, but that's just the cost of business and having competition right around the block. The cost was never more than the other barbershop and I'd rather support the people I've grown up knowing than a fancier store that just waltzed in later. Except this time the board wasn't quite as honest as it used to be. I walked in, got my usual order of an inch off, and get ready to pay. Only to be informed that, unlike every other time I get a haircut there, there's an extra two dollar charge for requesting the use of scissors. Apparently, that means giving then actual details about length is enough to bump up the price without telling you. To be clear, I don't mind paying 30 dollars instead of 28. It's not like it's more than the other option and I get needing to raise prices. My problem is that the main sign gives a false impression for anyone who is familiar with the older pricing, or doesn't know about the distinction, and the only indication that it's been changed is a board off to the back of the shop that you're not necessarily going to see walking in or even without prompting. One that might not be particularly clear about some of the differences. It feels like false advertising, like the people I've been seeing for years took advantage of how comfortable I was with them to try to squeeze me for more and then ask for a tip. The whole thing just feels exploitative and disingenuous. For a lot of people without history with this shop, this might be less of an issue. But for me, it's made me question whether the barbershop that I grew up with still exists and if I should ever go back. If you're looking for a haircut, this is a decent option, but make sure you understand what the terms and conditions are first. It's not the same as it used to be and only time will tell what that means for customers. EDIT: After reading the owner's response, I've attached a photo of the aforementioned sign. I understand that COVID and other circumstances have forced local businesses to adapt, and I can't blame them for needing to raise additional funds to cover their expenses, but someone who sees that isn't going to be thinking "this is the cost without using scissors." Especially when it wasn't for quite a long time. I appreciate the swift and reasonable response, but it feels like they took my review as more of an issue with rising costs. It's not. Honestly, I'm glad that they're doing their best to retain convenient prices for customers, I just strongly dislike it when my expectations are exploited with technically true statements. I'm still thankful for their past work and wish everyone at the store the best, but it's hard not to feel guarded toward them in a way I wasn't before and a customer shouldn't have to.

Owner's response

Hello cooper, I would like to start off with thank you for being a loyal and long time customer I’ve read your posts and I can say since Covid a lot has changed with the small (local) businesses we try to keep it cost friendly but also to maintain the shop you are correct about the sign outside but that’s falls into a standard haircut and scissor by request is $2 dollars more we have it posted on the price list in the front and in the back not to confuse customers if theirs anything we can do to make it up to you we’ll be glad once again we really appreciate your business and honesty- Gabriel Alex’s barbershop

Alex is one of the best barbers in the city, hands down. Found him when I lived in the neighborhood, but continued to come down all the way from Washington Heights just for his expertise. I always get compliments on how fresh I look every time I go here. It’s a nice feeling being able to trust your barber without fail, time after time.

Owner's response

Thank you much appreciate Daniel always a pleasure <br>

Good, busy, reliable neighborhood barbershop. The 2 brothers who run the barbershop learned from their father who originally opened the shop. A lot of my neighbors have come here for years. They remember your hair and your stories.

Owner's response

Thank you AL always a pleasure
