Floyd’s 99 Barbershop on Ohio Street is hands down one of my favorite spots in the city for a consistent, high-quality cut. While they have several locations throughout Chicago, this specific one is the most convenient for me and always delivers a great experience. The atmosphere is fantastic, especially the music—they always have a really cool, high-energy playlist going that makes the visit feel more like a break than a chore. The barbers are incredibly friendly, professional, and actually take the time to listen to what you want. Whether you're in for a quick trim or a more detailed style, the vibe here is always welcoming and laid back. It’s rare to find a place that balances a great aesthetic with genuinely skilled and personable staff, but the Ohio Street team nails it every time.

I was not happy with my haircut. I think Floyd’s should do a better job of qualifying their employees for fades. Not sure if it was luck of experience or the fact that they were understaffed. My appoint got rescheduled for 20 minutes later after arrival. Anyways the barber seemed overwhelmed and unfortunately I paid the price with my bad haircut. My fade was very uneven, and when I got home to take a look I had straggly hairs all over.

Owner's response

Oscar,

Thank you for sharing this and explaining what happened.

We’re really sorry to hear that your experience fell short, from the last-minute reschedule to feeling like your barber was overwhelmed, to leaving with a fade that was uneven and not cleaned up properly. You should be able to trust that anyone you’re booked with is confident with fades, and that you’ll go home with a detailed, finished cut, not stray hairs and disappointment.

We’d really appreciate the opportunity to follow up with you directly. If you’re open to it, please reach out to us at contactus@floydsbarbershop.com with your name and the date and time of your reservation so we can connect with you personally.

Thank you again for letting us know about your experience.

I had previously gone to Floyd’s 99 Barbershop in Orlando during school and always had a great experience. Because of that, I felt confident booking an appointment at the 209 E Ohio location for a haircut before a special dinner celebrating my partner’s recent graduation. Unfortunately, this visit was extremely disappointing. I showed multiple reference pictures of the exact hairstyle I’ve been getting consistently for the past three years. I only cut my hair every 4–6 months, and typically I just need a clean-up. The stylist did not spend more than a few seconds looking at the photos before starting. I trusted the process and didn’t question it at first. However, I quickly noticed she was using the clippers more aggressively than expected. Large amounts of hair started falling from the sides, and she spent a long time working on the back of my head. It became uncomfortable, and I ended up with visible red marks — something that has never happened to me before. When I finally looked in the mirror, it was too late. She had already used the machine without a guard and shaved a large portion of the back of my head far shorter than what I requested. When I pointed it out and showed the pictures again, she realized the mistake. She apologized and deducted $10 from the bill. I understand that hair grows back, and I’m usually not someone who makes a big deal about haircuts. But this one was significantly different from what I asked for and what was shown in multiple reference photos. It did not resemble the style I requested at all. I left feeling frustrated and honestly embarrassed — to the point that I had to stop at a scrub store to buy a cap to cover my head for work. This experience was disappointing, especially given my positive history with the brand. I hope more attention is given to actually reviewing client reference photos before starting a cut.

I have never written a review before but i am beyond upset after having my hair literally destroyed at floyds on 209 E Ohio st - I feel ashamed and I dont even know how i will look at other people I know tomorrow. first of all I walked in and went in person two days ago (Saturday) to request an appointment with somebody that has cut my hair before, this particular hairdresser that I know was there at the time but the person working in the front desk told me that she was booked that day and that she was going to be back tonight. I decided to wait for her and made an appointment tonight. I went in this evening to find out I was given an appointment with somebody else. I figured it wasn't a big deal, I told her specifically what i always tell everybody that has cut my hair in the past - i have not changed my style in years- she nodded and started giving me stroke after stroke with the cutting machine, I was telling myself to trust the process, she continued and continued until she pretty much cut the whole two sides of my head and left a bunch of hair on top, i feel ridiculous, i look at the mirror and i hate the way i look- i am beyond furious with what she did, i am even considering just shaving the whole head at this point, I am traveling in two days and she pretty much screwed me and my confidence on the trip- she took “a few dollars off” but it is not about the money it is about listening to the client and doing what the client wants instead of doing whatever you want and this includes both whoever was on the front desk saturday and the person cutting my hair, my head still hurts for how rough she was with the machine, completely unnaceptable

Owner's response

We’re genuinely sorry you left feeling this way, especially right before a trip. Every visit should leave you feeling confident and heard, and it’s clear that didn’t happen here, from the mix-up at the front desk to the cut itself. Any additional insight you’re willing to share would be appreciated. If you’re open to it, please reach out to us at contactus@floydsbarbershop.com so we can look into what happened at this shop and talk through how we can make it right.

Ryan S. gave me one of the best cuts I’ve had — clean, sharp, and dialed in. He took his time, nailed the details, and the shop vibe was great. I walked out looking like I pay my bills on time. Book Ryan S.

Owner's response

Thank you for shouting out Ryan! We’re lucky to have them on the team, and we’re even luckier to have clients like you, Sandeep.

I was really hoping for a good experience. I flew into Chicago yesterday and had scheduled an appointment for late afternoon. I arrived early and my room wasn't ready, so I walked over and asked if I get a cut earlier. Sure, they said...then the woman who I talked to asked the two free stylists which one wanted to help me...neither jumped at the opportunity. After about a minute or two of indecision, the young man drew the short straw apparently. When asked what I wanted, I said #4 on the sides blended to #6 on the top with the band just slightly longer. Mid-cut, I stopped him because it seemed he was definitely not taking much off the top. I told him again what I wanted. After a bit, he handed me the mirror. He barely took anything off the top. It looked bad. Eventually, he got close though the left side of my head's hair was about an inch longer than the right...I said fine...ended up buying a hair trimming scissors at Walgreens and fixed the cut myself. Very disappointing. Wish I had stuck to my original appt.

It actually saddens me to write this review. I’ll start off with the positive. I came in this morning as a walk in and was greeted right away from the lady who would cut my hair. She checked me and told me it would about a 10 minute wait which ended up being around 20-25 minutes, but that was fine. The other gentleman working with her did not have the most welcoming attitude and looked like he did not want to be there at all. Ambiance was nice and music was on point. Wall art with music cover art was really cool to see. Now getting to the bad. The lady who cut my hair did not do anything I asked her and frankly I don’t think she knew how to. I asked for a 1 mid fade. I feel like that’s pretty general. There is no fade on my head at all and it seems like she just did a 1 cut through my head except the top. I asked for a small trim on the top which she did do. But the cut itself is by far the worst haircut I have ever had. To make it worse, the cut itself was about as long as I waited to be seen. 20-25 minute for a fade sounds unusual to me. All my haircuts are a minimum of 45 minutes and it felt rushed and not even done well. I see an uneven spot on the back of my head that I honestly hope my hair grows back quick. To make matters worse, she had asked me if I wanted my eyebrows trimmed and I asked for only a cleanup. She proceeded to trim off my thick eyebrows to the point that they look horrible and thinner than my facial hair. Everything looks uneven. I emphasized that I was wanted to look professional and it’s the opposite of that. Given all this, despite the lady being super nice and professional, I will not be coming back. The price for a cut is very much fair but I would pay a lot more for a quality and well done cut.

Excellent Service – Friendly, Accommodating, and Professional I had a great experience at Floyd’s 99. The staff were genuinely caring, took the time to ask about the details I wanted, and made sure everything was just right. They were also able to accommodate me last minute as a walk-in, with no issues at all. The atmosphere is friendly, the service is efficient, and the pricing offers great value for the quality of care. Huge thanks to the team—I really appreciated it. Highly recommended!

Owner's response

Thanks for the kind words! We’re thrilled the service, energy and atmosphere hit the mark, and we can’t wait to welcome you back!
