Love this barbershop — it’s easily one of the best in town. A special shoutout to Aaron J, who not only gives phenomenal haircuts but also makes every appointment something to look forward to. He’s incredibly skilled, genuine, and just a great person to chat with. I leave every time looking sharp and feeling good. Couldn’t recommend Aaron more!

I have been going to Aaron Johnson for about 8 years now and not only do I get an outstanding haircut I also get great conversation and a feeling like I am amongst friends. In fact everyone at Esquire is so friendly and treats me like they know me. I even go back on a separate day just so Ricky, who's a beard artist, can straight razor my beard. So thank you to Esquire for maing me feel better every week.

I’ve been getting my hair cut by Aaron J for over seven years and have yet to find a better cut anywhere in the city (or elsewhere, for that matter). The owners have worked hard to make Esquire a place that is welcoming to anyone seeking a good, solid barber haircut. The price is always right, too. I always leave my appointments feeling good.

I’ve been having Aaron J. cut my hair since 2015. Really excellent service. Always leave looking great. Awesome rapport, too. Recommend him to everyone that asks.

Owner's response

Thank you so much for the review! It’s always a great time when you’re in the shop! Looking forward to your next visit.

Aaron treats his customers worse than he expects them to treat him. Allow me to explain: I showed up for an haircut today 8-9 minutes late. Aaron refused to see me, saying it would ruin his entire day. Maybe that seems reasonable to you -- I was late, and it was his first cut of the day -- but here's why it's not: In the year or so I've been going to him, he's cancelled on me twice. Once, he said he was sick and asked if we could reschedule. When I asked when we might re-sked -- informing him I needed a cut before the weekend for MY WEDDING -- he went days without responding, only offering actual apptoointment times after I followed up several times. No offer to connect me with someone else in the shop, no recognition this was important. Then, a few months later, he cancelled on me literally as I was on the way to the shop: "Hey bud! I've got you at 8:30 am but I'm out in the suburbs right now for some birthday stuff and won't be back until a bit later. Can I get you in later todya or later this week?" When I sent my availabilty for a reschedule, he again didn't respond until I followed up. llness is one thing. "Birthday stuff" is just blowing me off. In short: Aaron will cancel on customers last minute and ignore important rescheduling requests. But if you show up 8-9 minutes late, he will refuse to see you, then speak to you like an aggrieved party. He will cite a policy on the website that says they "generally" do not accept customers who are ten minutes late, even though you were objectively *not 10 minutes late.* (Let's be real: a customer showing up 5-10 minutes late is part of running a barber shop. Or a dentist's office. Or whatever.) EDIT: He will then charge you full price for your "missed" appointment. I kept going to him because he was convenient, reasonably priced, and seemed like a good guy at heart. But no more. He's actually petulant, unprofessional, unreasonable, condescending, arrogant, unfair -- just childish, really.

I’ve been a happy customer of Esquire for years and I realized I haven’t written a review. The owner, Aaron, is friendly, professional, and does everything he can to accommodate his customers. After receiving my first haircut from Aaron, he said I could come back at any point if I wasn’t happy and he’d fix it free of charge. I’ve never needed to take him up on his offer in my 3 years of seeing him.

Owner's response

Thank you so much Conor! Kind words like this keep us going. Looking forward to many years with you ahead!

If I could give zero stars, I would. Saw Aaron W. a while back, he was fine. Went again about a year ago on a walk-in and the owner, Aaron J., was pretty rude and arrogant for a guy giving a basic buzz cut. Went again today because everyone deserves a second chance and got Aaron J. again. I got there 5 minutes before he opened and he was watching TV. Even though he saw me, he made no attempt to greet me or say he'd be right with me. When he unlocked, his half-hearted wave to enter was made with the effort of an extremely unhappy person. I asked him if he could also run a trimmer over my stubble so I could shave more easily later. He replied haughtily "No, because I don't do beard trims". I've never had a barber or stylist refuse a quick stubble knock-down; maybe that's beyond his skill set. At that point, I was tired of Aaron J. acting like he was doing me a favor so I left before the haircut. He remarks below that I was rude and he was cordial. If that's his cordial side, I'd hate to see him in a bad mood! Esquire is one of those hipster places that acts like they're reinventing the wheel because they do shaves, etc. Save your money and go somewhere else.

Owner's response

Hi there Tim!

First of all, we would like to apologize for your experience! At Esquire we want everyone to feel comfortable and at home.

We do want to point out a couple of things, though. Our records actually show that you’ve only been in to see Aaron J. and Aaron W. once each. It’s just a little confusing saying that you’ve had a bad experience with the same person twice whenever it seems that you were with two separate people.

Also, it is important to point out that Aaron was simply saying that he doesn’t offer beard trims, and would have gladly booked you with another barber that does offer that service, then you made a rude remark and stormed off.

You can reference our website where it clearly states that not all barbers offer all services, and getting a beard trim after a buzz cut would require you to make another appointment for that service.

Again, we do apologize for your experience, however, Aaron was cordial with you in trying to explain the situation, and you met that with hostility.

Thank you for coming in, and thank you for your review!

Wallace is an incredibly skilled and humble barber who has completely transformed my hair journey! As someone with limited experience seeing a professional for my hair, I couldn’t have asked for a better barber. Wallace has always been kind, patient, and professional, making me feel comfortable whenever I sit in their chair. I have long, curly hair, and my hair has been quite challenging to manage due to medical situations. Wallace not only gave me consistent, high-quality haircuts but also provided invaluable advice and care to help me manage my hair difficulties. Thanks to Wallace, I’m now living my best hair life and feeling more confident than ever! If you’re looking for a barber who is not only talented but also genuinely cares about their clients, Wallace is the one. I can’t recommend them enough!

My first barber “Miracle on 34th Street”-ed me because my hair was too long and had me come back the next morning for someone who was more skilled with my hairstyle. I really appreciate it! A good cut, and a pug in the window to boot.
