The cuts are good, but wow are the times all over the place. My first cut was with Nick, who asked me to come in early and then I waited for 30 minutes. A bit annoying but the result was terrific. Nick books out a ways, so my second cut was with someone else. It took over an hour, during which she stopped cutting to talk so many times, I think it was probably 30 minutes of actual effort. I even told her at the beginning that I had to get back to work after, which apparently had no effect. I can't justify that much time on a simple cut.

My friend Goran recommended Black River about six months ago, and I’ve been a client ever since. The barbershop is great, especially Bryan—he is a top master of his craft and an amazing human being. The shop itself is very nice and well-organized, and everyone is friendly! Plus, I always get compliments on my haircut.

After tirelessly searching for a barber in Chicago that could replace my barber of three years back in California, I decided to book an appointment at Black River Barbershop once I combed through their glowing reviews and checked out their Instagram. I booked with Rae, her last appointment on a Friday night, and never in my entire experience of getting my haircut have I left feeling like a million dollars. I can’t stop looking at my hair in the mirror! The precision and technique Rae has for cutting hair is truly remarkable. We talked so much about my hair, and she took her time in discussing the reference photos I brought in and how we could best adapt the style to my hair type. I instantly felt like she wanted my hair to look its best, and that she was committed to ensuring that I would leave with exactly what I came in for. I’ll admit I was nervous at first, because I had recently had a botched cut, but being in Rae’s chair immediately made me feel like I was in the right place. Honestly, my confidence is high today with my new haircut, and I can’t recommend this shop enough to everyone. When I walked in, I was greeted by the lovely staff who made me feel at home, and not to mention the most ADORABLE pup I think I’ve ever seen! Every person getting their haircuts when I came in left looking dashing and dapper, so you know each barber is talented at their trade! I am so glad to have come in for a haircut, and highly recommend everyone do the same!

I’ve gone here a few times and have had great experiences each time. All of the barbers are very friendly and clearly know what they are doing. Rae has cut my hair the last two times and has done a wicked good job each time. She asks a lot of questions and it’s obvious she really cares about making sure you’re happy with your haircut. I definitely recommend this barbershop.

I've been going to Black River for the last 3 years and have seen several different barbers during that time. Every experience has been wonderful. The barbers are friendly, accommodating, and excellent at their jobs. I regularly see Emma and she is especially great. The service is absolutely worth the price and you will walk out with a haircut you're happy with.

First time doing a real barber and had my hair cut by Izzy. She was extremely calming and I felt at ease choosing what would suit my needs. She was helpful and flexible and made my cut unique to me. I highly recommend this shop and Izzy. And if you're a dog person her dog is also awesome.

Bryan did an amazing work with my haircut and beard line up. He's personable, very skillful, attention to detail but above all, that customer service is top notch! I also had the pleasure to meet one of the co-owners, Nick and he was also a great guy. Great customer care and engaging. I'm already looking forward to my next visit. Highly recommend!

Needed a haircut, badly, and scheduled an appointment on a whim - was a little nervous about the price but now I can't wait to come back. Great experience, Steve was awesome and did an excellent job. Place is very nice, and the vibe is very funky and cool.

Great location and great haircuts. Easy to book haircuts online, and the shop is a hop and a skip away from the Western blue line stop. I get my hair cut with Nina and she is great! cannot recommend her enough. The atmosphere of the shop is warm and inviting, but also quirky/original at the same time. Prices are fair, and they have great hair products for sale as well. Also side note--great people-watching opportunities and views of people dancing at big city swing across the street if you get your haircut facing the street.
