Best fade haircut my boyfriend has ever had. Martina took the time to listen to exactly what he wanted and offered great recommendations. Well worth every cent. The atmosphere was great and the shop was clean. He found his go to spot. Highly recommended.

I’ve been getting my short pixie/clipper cut at Jax for years, always booking a 60-minute appointment because my cut is detailed and clipper-based. Before ever coming here, I emailed the shop to confirm they cut women’s hair, and they assured me they were inclusive and that services were based on time and technique—not gender. I also recognize that I’m a bit of an outlier: I’m a woman who prefers a very short clipper cut, which many salons aren’t trained to do. That’s exactly why I chose a barbershop like Jax and why I’ve been a loyal client. I understand that a lot can get lost through text, but that’s why it’s important for front-desk staff to read the full message thread and check a client’s profile history—especially at a premium-priced shop where that level of care is part of what clients are paying for. I was clear about the service I needed, and my history reflects that. Unfortunately, when I recently tried to book the same 60-minute appointment I’ve always had, I was told that my barber “doesn’t do women’s haircuts” and was redirected to a salon. This was surprising and disappointing, especially since my haircut is short, uses clippers, and has been performed here many times. The language used was gendered, and the experience contradicted the inclusivity the shop previously communicated to me in writing. I appreciate that Caroline reached out afterward to apologize, but the apology doesn’t address the larger issue: the gap between the inclusive values Jax states publicly and how those values are practiced in real interactions. As a long-time client, it was disheartening to feel unwelcome simply because I’m a woman requesting a short clipper cut—the very service that brought me here in the first place. If Jax wants to uphold true inclusivity—especially in a city like Seattle—their booking system and staff training should reflect that. Services should be categorized by hair length, technique, and time needed (e.g., Short Cut, Clipper/Fade, Pixie, Medium Cut, Long Cut, Extended-Time Cut) rather than by gender. A clear statement such as “We cut all genders; please book based on time and technique” would prevent misunderstandings and ensure clients aren’t excluded based on assumptions. I hope the shop takes this feedback in the spirit intended and uses it as an opportunity to align its stated policies with the actual client experience. I’ve truly enjoyed coming to Jax over the years, which makes this experience all the more disappointing.
Owner's response
Hi Lisa,

I’m sorry about your experience at Jax. We strive not only to give clients excellent hair services but also a level of customer service above the standard. We would never intentionally make anyone feel excluded or unwelcome. We greatly apologize if we came across that way.

As a barbershop we specialize in barbering. Our barbers exclusively cut men’s hair or women’s short haircuts. We let our women clients know, that because we are a barbershop, our skill and tools are limited. (ie; women’s styling and tools like curling irons, etc.) Whether it be with clippers or scissors, we offer the same services to all no matter the gender based on our barbers training. That being said, not all of our barbers offer the same services such as, face shaves or long ( below shoulder length) haircuts.

Our booking system/menu does indicate different types of haircuts/services and the allotted time to complete each service. Along with pricing. If a service doesn’t appear on the barbers menu, that means the barber is not offering said service. Our “regular”haircuts have never been 60 minutes. They range from 30 minutes to 45 minutes. We have added in recent years longer time slots for long hair haircuts and skin fades. Our clients do not dictate how much time is spent on them but is up to our Barbers, their level of training and timing. We would never take a client for the sake of taking a client. We would rather refer clients else where, when we do not feel confident that we can achieve what the client is requesting.

You requested for a 60 minute time slot and we informed you that our regular haircuts are booked out for 30 to 45 minutes depending on the barber. Based on your last visit with us, in January of 2024, that appointment was booked as a “long hair haircut”. We made assumptions on the type of service you were asking for based on that. This was our mistake and should have taken more effort in clarifying. We take full responsibility and will take this as a learning experience. We do appreciate the feedback and again apologize for the misunderstanding.

We were pleasantly surprised at how beautiful the interior was. We were quickly assisted in by Katie (husband is wheelchair bound). Katie was thoughtful throughout my haircut and my husband’s haircut. We both received the cuts we were hoping to achieve, and with great conversation. The vibe of the shop is chill and welcoming, and definitely a must if you’re looking for a cut. Thank you Charlotte, and Mahalo, Katie and we look forward to our next cut when we’re back in town ❤️❤️❤️

I've been going to Martina at Jax Barber Shop for the past three years, and she is simply the best! Every haircut is consistently perfect—she pays attention to every detail and makes sure I leave looking sharp every time. Her professionalism and skill are unmatched, and she always takes the time to understand exactly what I want. On top of that, she’s friendly, easy to talk to, and creates a great experience every visit. If you're looking for a top-notch barber, Martina is the one to see. Highly recommend!

Very put together barber shop in deep downtown Seattle. Great street appeal. On entry my reception genuinely pleasant and attentive. Martina was immediately charming and comfortable, and has obviously cut a lot of men’s hair, as she naturally avoided my cow’s lick. Countless barbers have trimmed through this curse of hair, only to leave me with a totally unmanageable cockatiel adornment. In summary, nice people in a cool space who know how to cut men’s hair.

I got a great haircut from Katie. She was warm and friendly throughout. The space is clean and inviting. The receptionist was pleasant and helpful. They don't leave you waiting when showing for an appointment. Ignore the few one-star reviews from customers who don't understand how being late for appointments affects other customers. I highly recommend this place!
