We have had a great experience at Handlebar. My husband already has been going here for years seeing his barber, Jay, and has always loved the service and haircut. What prompted me to write a review was how great they took care of my toddler son for his first haircut! John at the front desk, helped my son stay calm by making silly faces and playing around, while Jay quickly gave my son his first hair cut. They were great with me hanging around with my son while hubby got a haircut. I really enjoyed my own experience there, and recommend this barbershop!

Got my haircut done by Ashley. I came in looking to change up my style. Ashley took the time to hear me out and explain what she had in mind, and how the cut would look. She absolutely killed it! After the cut she also made sure I had the proper products for my hair care. Ashley is a 10/10!

I have to say places like this are what make going local for shaving supplies and advice so worth it instead of online shopping. They've got a very good supply of artisanal shaving soaps and creams and aftershaves. And where when you go online you can't really smell the fragrance (these artisinal shaving soaps and creams are works of art) whereas at the HandleBar you can peruse the selection and find what really suits you best. Bless the staff are very friendly and helpful. They've also got an excellent supply of high quality double-edged razors. And the prices compete with what you see online. You can't do better than that.

The best, most authentic, barbershop I've found in Thousand Oaks. Multiple very talented barbers, but test out a couple to find your best fit. Great products and knowledgable staff about all of them. Upstairs or down, I've never left dissapointed. Ashley has been my go-to for nearly 9 months or so... but Tanner is solid when he's in. My son also love the atmosphere, and the mug rootbeer.

I had high hopes for The HandleBar Barbershop in Thousand Oaks, but unfortunately, my experience was disappointing. I went in with medium-length hair, looking for a "lived-in" undercut—something textured and well-blended. However, my stylist didn’t seem particularly engaged or enthusiastic about the cut, and it showed in the results. He started by making straight scissor cuts to remove the length, which was fine, but never went back to blend or feather those areas into the rest of my hair. This left me with harsh, unblended sections that looked like shelves on either side of my head. It felt rushed and lacked the attention to detail that makes a haircut truly great. A good stylist should take the time to refine their work and ensure the client leaves feeling confident. Unfortunately, that wasn’t my experience. I’ll be looking elsewhere next time.

Owner's response

Hi Eric, I'm so sorry to read this. I just spoke with your barber, and he really enjoyed your conversation and would love to see you again to make any adjustments you'd like. If that isn't what you're comfortable with, I'd be glad to get you set up with someone else. Bottom line, we want you to be happy with your haircut. Please feel free to contact me directly and I can help get this taken care of. I will follow up with an email as well.
I hope to hear from you soon.
-Gareth
thehandlebarbarbers@gmail.com

First time Customer, got a Two-Bits from Logan and have to give multiple compliments. Firstly, I had longer than shoulder length hair, and was getting it shortened roughly 6"-10". Secondly, I haven't been shaven for almost 15 years. Logan was perfect, was awesome with the hair and I am exceedingly happy with the way it came out. When it comes to the beard, I was even more pleased. Almost NO irritation or razor burn, excellent lines, and overall, a very pleasant hot towel/shave experience. TL:DR; I now see Logan every two weeks.

Don is absolutely the best barber out family I have encountered. He's very detailed oriented, extremely professional, and friendly. Each time my husband or son visits the HandleBar barbershop, they are extremely satisfied with the service.

Today I had an appointment with a barber they called me out of the blue to tell me that they can’t honor my appointment. I love Logan the barber but the management of the store is disorganized. You pay a 100$ you expect the service with it. The place is small I get it but if you can’t honor your reservation be apologizing to your guests instead they called me without an explaination. I don’t want to hurt a small business but this is not the first time they treated me like that. I used to come every week. No Respect for the customer time. They don’t like people there. Logan if you read this message, you deserve to be your own boss I would open the barbershop for you. Contact me by answering this email or ask them for my phone number.

Owner's response

Hi Max,
We completely understand how inconvenient it is when an appointment needs to be rescheduled. I would like to clarify a few things based on your review.
You had an appointment with us today at 11:45. This morning, we were notified that the barber you were booked with had a personal emergency he needed to attend to, and would be unable to accommodate your appointment. We called you before our shop even opened, around 9:30 this morning. We wanted to give you as much notice as possible.
The rest of the barbers on staff were also fully booked, so our hands were tied and there were no other options today for us to take care of you. As you mentioned, we are a small and busy shop and situations like this one are very difficult to reschedule for the same day. We did apologize, and offered to reschedule you to tomorrow with your preferred barber (Logan). You weren't willing or able to reschedule, which was unfortunate. However, you seemed very bothered that we wouldn't provide the exact personal details of why we needed to reschedule you. That was something we were not willing to share. It's a sensitive matter that we were not going to announce to clients. In the end, we were only trying to reschedule you for tomorrow. Not cancel your appointment without any reason.

As for your next statement saying "this is not the first time they treated me like that", and "no respect for the customer time": I would like to clarify that as well. The only other times we have not been able to accommodate both your haircut and beard sculpt services have been on dates where you haven't shown up to your scheduled appointment on time. On at least three occasions since February of this year (2024) you arrived very late to your appointment. One time was 20 minutes late, and two other times were 30-45 minutes late. We do what we can, but at some point there just isn't enough time left over for your reserved booking time to accurately complete your services without the barber running behind and affecting other client's reservations. On these occasions we were still able to give you a haircut and beard trim, however the shaving services were unable to be performed due to lack of remaining time on your appointment.
I hope this clears up any confusion on your end.
We take pride in our work, and we always try to give advance notice on any scheduling changes and offer alternatives. I am sorry we were unable to remedy this particular situation to your satisfaction today.

After 3 years of cutting my husband's hair, I thought it was high time for him to get a professional haircut. We were in Thousand Oaks for a wedding and my husband wanted to look presentable. He definitely got more than just a presentable haircut at the HandleBar. Thanks to Jay, he got a great haircut and looked super sharp. Great atmosphere, very friendly, and my husband also got great advice about razors, shaving soaps, etc. These guys at the HandleBar know what they're doing, for sure. Highly recommend!
