I’ve been getting my hair cut by Joseph at Gary’s Barber Shop for years. He’s always game to try something new—even when my wife raises an eyebrow—and he’s never let me down. Every visit feels like I’m his best customer. Gary and Joseph have built a shop that’s more than just a haircut—it’s a neighborhood staple with heart. Highly recommend.

Asked for a skin fade and was treated with contempt, like I'm an idiot for not knowing what length I want, by the chubby young barber. This is not the way you do a consultation. Before leaving I mentioned something to Gary and we ended up having a shouting match in the middle of the shop after he got defensive since the chubby young barber is his son. Now I understand why the kid has such a bad attitude. Won't be going back. I get it, family over business, but this not how you treat customers. Marvin is the only redeemable thing about this establishment.

Owner's response

We’re sorry to hear that your visit didn’t meet your expectations.
The barber you referred to, his name is Joseph. He was simply doing his job by asking about your haircut preferences during the consultation. That’s standard procedure so we can deliver exactly what clients are looking for. Your reaction was unexpected, blaming Joseph for having an attitude—when in reality, he remained calm and professional throughout. We don’t believe shouting with disrespect in the middle of a business is ever appropriate or productive.
We always strive to treat our clients with respect, but we also expect that same courtesy in return—especially toward our team.
We wish you the best moving forward.
My first time in today, definitely not my last. I was tired of going to the big chains just because they were cheap with a 50/50 chance I'd walk out and put a hat on in the car. I walked in 2 hours before close and they had me in a chair within 20 minutes. Great cut with no "break in period" required afterward. Flying out to see my fiancé graduate in 5 days so I didn't want that goofy fresh-off-the-chair look. Shaved neck, hot towel, all that good stuff. It was still reasonably priced so you can feel good about tipping. Also if you're someone with fuller/thick hair that you like to have thinned without it sticking up in the back, I had good luck.

This place should be a 5.0. Took my two year old here not knowing how the haircut would turn out or how they would receive a two year old and they were beyond fantastic. They were great with my kid, the haircut was flawless and quick. Thank you, and we will be back!

Owner's response

Thank you for your review! Looking forward to see you again.

Been going here for 10+ years, starting when I was in 5th grade. I’ve tried different places between now and then, but I always find myself coming back to Gary’s. Great location, great staff, and a tremendous experience. Joseph (Joe) usually cuts my hair, and always does a great job. Joe recently launched his own line of hair products, and not only are they great quality, but they’re affordable and made without using chemicals. Lifetime customer for sure 👍

This was my first time in the shop and last. Came in on Friday morning. There were 3 barbers and one customer in a chair. I wasn’t greeted or welcomed, was given a hand gesture toward a chair. He asked how I wanted it cut and smugly laughed twice when I told what I’d like. He actually asked if I normally get my hair cut at Great Clips. It’s a pretty straightforward cut so he knew how to cut it and the cut looks decent. He didn’t say a word to me during the cut while the other barber was having friendly conversation with his client. My barber seemed annoyed to have a customer. At the register he asked if I’d like to be put in the system for next time. There definitely won’t be a next time. I just came in today because I was in the area for work and the shop had good reviews. I’ll keep giving my business to my normal place that cares about doing a good job and cares about customer service.

When you walk into Gary’s Barbershop in Scottsdale, AZ, you might just come out feeling like royalty, and I’m not exaggerating! This old school gem is a throwback in the best way possible, and let me tell you about my barber, Roman. This guy is the Michelangelo of barbers! Imagine sitting down for a beard trim and a straight razor head shave, and ending up in what feels like a coronation ceremony. Roman doesn’t just trim your beard; he sculpts it with the precision of a surgeon. He’s so meticulous that he quadruple-checks his work - yes, you read that right, FOUR times - just to make sure you’re looking nothing less than regal. Now, let’s talk about the royal treatment. It’s not just a shave and a trim; it’s an experience. You’re pampered with not one, not two, but at least four hot towels. And just when you think it can’t get any better, Roman surprises you with a head and shoulder massage that’s so relaxing, you might forget you’re in a barbershop and not a spa. I left Gary’s feeling like I’d just been crowned king of Scottsdale. If I lived in the area, I’d probably be there every week, sitting on my throne (aka the barber chair) and enjoying another round of royal treatment from Roman. Oh, and a pro tip: bring cash to keep it old school, but they’ll accept your credit cards too, in case you’re not carrying the king’s ransom in your wallet. No appointments needed, just walk in and prepare to be treated like royalty! Gary’s Barbershop is where you go not just for a haircut, but for an experience you won’t forget. Long live King Roman, the barber!

Gary was awesome. I moved to the valley recently and I've had a hard time finding a good barber. I'll leave it at this... If you're reading reviews wondering of you should go... GO. You won't regret it. Gary has himself a definite repeat customer
